I am from the bones of my parents The process of their love And from the unfair responsibility Of the oldest raising the youngest I am from playing outside until twilight Where curfew was the streetlamps and Crowns were made of twigs and braided blades of grass I am from the disconnect of childhood and adulthood Where third grade was a challenge And Meg started college I am from laughing so loud with my brother and sisters
That you can’t hear your neighbor at the door And where their returns from college is cause of celebration and count-downs I am from zipping up coats and picking out pumpkins and sawing our own Christmas trees Like how I am from my favorite parts of the Macy’s parade and the smell of thanksgiving Slippery cool potatoes peeled in my hands and wishing on bones I am from advent calendars and appetizer dinners on Christmas Eve Where I never found the pickle in the tree before the others I am from Eat what we cooked or make your own food And I’ll give you a quarter if you try xyz All because I didn’t like sauerkraut I am from Air Force Band of Flight performances on Sunday evenings And wandering through the mannequins and airplanes Just like how I am from Aim-High-Go-Airforce and Free pools and healthcare and Thrust, Twist, Ahh! I am from trading family traditions for cheap alternatives Like a fake tree and smaller pumpkins, if any at all I am from moments of love too great to bear, Through tears of fear of disappointing your kids And from missing them when they’re gone I am from love and loyalty despite all tragedy And I am from knowing with other-worldly affirmation of love eternal
